Initial Call at an AFIS Aerodrome

Your first transmission at any uncontrolled field follows the standard initial call structure. You identify the station, your callsign, your position, and what you want.

Station callsign + Your callsign + Position + Request

The station uses the functional suffix appropriate to the field. At a field called Wels, the AFIS station is called "Wels Radio." At a field called Salzburg, it might be "Salzburg Information."

Always listen on the frequency for a few seconds before transmitting to avoid blocking active transmissions.

POSITION: 5 miles south

ACTION: Request taxi information

PILOT: Wels Radio, OE-CMV, five miles south, request taxi information.

AFIS: OE-CMV, Wels Radio.

PILOT: OE-CMV.

AFIS: OE-CMV, taxi via Alpha, runway 27, wind 280 degrees 3 knots, QNH 1016.

PILOT: Taxi via Alpha, runway 27, wind 280 degrees 3 knots, QNH 1016, OE-CMV.

Note the order: you name the station you are calling, then your callsign. In the readback, your callsign comes last. This is standard at all aerodromes.
