Subchapter 10.5 – Common Readback Errors and Exam Traps

The Trap: A clearance has six or more elements. Many pilots read back only the most recent or most important element, forgetting others.

Correct readback: Cleared to Munich aerodrome via direct routing, climb to flight level zero-eight-zero, after departure turn right heading zero-nine-zero, departure frequency one-nineteen decimal four-five-zero, report level flight level zero-eight-zero, QNH one-zero-two-zero, OE-DMS.

Wrong readback (what many pilots do): Cleared to Munich, flight level zero-eight-zero, OE-DMS.

This is dangerous because it does not confirm the heading, frequency, or reporting requirement. ATC could be uncertain whether you understood the complete clearance.

Rule: Read back the entire clearance in the same order ATC issued it. Use the CRAFT mnemonic: Callsign, Route, Altitude, Frequency (or Flight instructions), and Type (aircraft).
