Part 1: Radio Direction Finding – The Foundation

The terminology around direction finding can be confusing if you're not careful. The exam loves to test this because the terms sound similar but mean quite different things. Let's establish the definitions clearly so you don't mix them up.
QDM = magnetic heading TO the station.
QDM is short for "Magnetic heading," and the "M" reminds you it's magnetic. When ATC gives you a QDM, they're telling you: "Fly THIS magnetic heading and you'll fly directly toward the station." It's sometimes called the "inbound track" because it points toward the beacon. If the station is east of you and you need to fly to it, your QDM might be 090°.
QDR = magnetic heading FROM the station, or more precisely, the reciprocal of the QDM.
QDR stands for "magnetic bearing" (not heading, but bearing). It's the outbound direction. If your QDM is 090° (fly east to the station), your QDR is 270° (fly west away from the station). They're always opposite, 180° apart. QDR is useful when you've just passed over the station and want to continue flying away from it.
QTE = true bearing FROM the station.
QTE uses true north instead of magnetic north. This is less commonly used in European VFR flying, but it appears in the syllabus and could appear on your exam. Remember: QTE is TRUE, not magnetic. At an aerodrome in Austria, for example, if the magnetic variation is about 2° east, a true bearing of 092° would correspond to a magnetic bearing (QDR) of 090°.
QUJ = magnetic bearing FROM the station as calculated by the aircraft.
This is a calculated bearing, not measured by the ground station. You look at your magnetic compass, determine which direction the station is from you, and tell ATC: "QUJ 270." The station then compares your calculated bearing with their measured bearing (QDR). If they match (or are close), that confirms your compass is working correctly and your position estimate is reasonable.
Notice the pattern: QDM and QDR are always PROVIDED BY THE STATION. QTE is provided by the station but in true bearings. QUJ is something YOU provide when you can see or estimate where the station is.

Understanding Bearings and Their Navigation Application
A bearing provides a line of position, which allows you to determine your position relative to a known ground station. When the ground station provides you with a bearing (QDM, QDR, or QTE), you have established a line on your chart that passes through both the station and your aircraft. This line of position tells you that you must be somewhere along that line—but it doesn't tell you how far from the station you are. This is why a second bearing from a different station (or a second bearing from the same station taken several minutes apart as you fly) is so valuable: the intersection of two lines of position gives you a precise location, called a "fix."
Uses of Direction Finding in Flight Operations
Direction finding is used for multiple critical purposes in aviation:
  1. Navigational assistance: When you are uncertain of your exact position, a VDF bearing provides confirmation. You can plot it on your chart and know you are on that line from the station.

  2. Position fixing: By obtaining bearings from two different stations (or from the same station at different times), you can plot two intersecting lines of position and determine your precise location.

  3. Tracking to and from stations: A QDM allows you to fly directly toward a station (homing in), while a QDR allows you to fly directly away from it. This capability is essential when visibility is poor or when you need to navigate to a specific location.

  4. Locating aircraft in emergency situations: When an aircraft is in distress and its position is unknown, Direction Finding is one of the tools search and rescue services use to locate it. The distressed aircraft's radio transmissions can be tracked by multiple ground stations, and the intersection of bearings from multiple stations reveals the aircraft's location.
