In IFR flight, radar vectors are one of the primary tools ATC uses to separate aircraft and sequence them for approach. A vector is a specific magnetic or true heading that ATC assigns to position your aircraft on a desired flight path. The critical principle underlying all vectoring is transparency: ATC will always tell you why you are being vectored.
This is a matter of safety and situational awareness. You need to understand whether you are being vectored for traffic avoidance, sequencing, noise abatement, obstacle clearance, or other operational reasons. If you do not hear a reason, ask for clarification. You can never assume why you have been given a vector.
Vectors in European airspace are normally expressed in magnetic degrees. In polar or high-latitude regions, true degrees may be used instead. Always confirm with the controlling unit which reference system applies if there is any doubt.
