Practical Scenarios: Putting It Together

Let us work through a realistic example combining multiple elements.

Scenario: You are flying D-EFGH, a Cessna 172. You are 20 miles south of Wels Airport, planning to land there. Wels is an uncontrolled aerodrome with AFIS on 123.3 MHz. You have checked the NOTAM, the weather is VFR (Visual Flight Rules) with 10 km visibility, wind 280 degrees 5 knots. The active runway is 27.

Step 1: Initial Call (15 miles out, descending through 3000 feet)

You tune 123.3 MHz, listen for 5 seconds to ensure no one is transmitting, then transmit:

"Wels Radio, D-EFGH, 15 miles south, 3000 feet, request landing information."

The operator responds:

"D-EFGH, Wels Radio, go ahead."

You now provide a position report:

"D-EFGH, south of Schwanenstatt, 3000 feet, inbound for landing, runway 27."

The operator provides information:

"D-EFGH, runway 27, wind 280 degrees 5 knots, QNH 1016, report on final."

You readback:

"Runway 27, wind 280 degrees 5 knots, QNH 1016, will report on final, D-EFGH."

You now have the essential information. You set your altimeter to QNH 1016. You mentally note the wind is nearly aligned with runway 27 (light crosswind from the left).
