Obtain ATIS early: Listen to the recorded weather, wind, and runway 5–10 minutes before arrival. Write down key details (runway, wind, QNH .
Call early enough: Approach or Tower should hear from you at least 5 minutes before you need to enter the control zone.
Be clear about position and intentions: State where you are, your altitude, your destination, and what you want (overhead join, direct base, straight-in request).
Join the circuit as cleared: If ATC modifies your requested join (e.g., you asked for straight-in but they say overhead), accept their clearance without argument. They see the traffic.
Make position calls: Downwind, base, final. Keep them brief and clear. Include the runway number.
Report traffic in sight: When ATC points out traffic and you see it, say "traffic in sight." If you do not see it, say "negative contact" and request vectors.
Continue approach until cleared to land: Do not assume you can land once you are on final. Wait for "cleared to land."
Go around if unsafe: An unstable approach or unexpected obstruction justifies a go-around. Execute it and advise ATC.
Vacate the runway promptly: Use the first safe exit. Report "runway vacated" to Tower before moving to Ground frequency
Follow Ground's taxi instructions: Write down the route, read it back, and follow taxiways carefully. Ask for clarification if unsure.
