Missed Approach Point (MAPt)

Definition

The Missed Approach Point (MAPt) is the point in a non-precision or circling approach at which a pilot must decide whether to proceed with a landing or initiate the published missed approach procedure if the required visual references have not been acquired. It marks the end of the final approach segment and the beginning of the missed approach segment.
In precision approaches, a similar decision is made at the Decision Altitude (DA) rather than a specific MAPt.

Purpose

  • Provide a clear and fixed position for transition to missed approach
  • Ensure the aircraft can safely climb away from terrain and obstacles if landing is not possible
  • Standardize the go/no-go decision point in non-precision procedures

Types of MAPt Determination

Approach Type MAPt Location
VOR/NDB Overhead the navaid or a specific DME fix
RNAV (LNAV) At a named fix or waypoint in the GPS/FMS
LOC-only Often at a specified DME or timing point
Circling Based on aircraft position relative to runway threshold
ILS/LPV No MAPt — instead, DA is used as the decision point

How MAPt Is Defined

Segment Role
Final Approach Segment Aircraft descends on approach profile toward MAPt
MAPt Decision point to either land or go around
Missed Approach Segment Begins immediately after MAPt and includes climb, turns, and safe routing

Actions at the MAPt

  • If runway is in sight and safe to land:
➤ Continue visually to a safe landing
  • If visual contact is not established:
    ➤ Initiate missed approach immediately

Chart Depiction

Approach charts label the MAPt with a bold “M” symbol or describe it in profile view.
May be based on:

  • DME distance from a fix (e.g., “MAPt at 5.8 DME from VOR”)
  • GPS waypoint (e.g., MAPt = RWY03 threshold)
  • Time from FAF when no distance or GPS is available

Phraseology Examples

  • “Approaching MAPt, 1,000 feet, no contact.”
  • “MAPt reached, commencing missed approach.”
  • “Runway in sight, landing.”

Tips for Pilots

  • ✅ Always brief the MAPt location and missed approach procedure before descent
  • ✅ Know how to identify the MAPt: DME, GPS, or timer
  • ✅ Do not continue below MDA before reaching the MAPt
  • ✅ Practice missed approach procedures using LearnATC’s non-precision approach module
