Learn ATC - Overview of features and modules

Learn ATC offers you the fastest and most efficient way to learn aeronautical radio communication thanks to a unique combination of simulator, training tools and reference material. Our platform is aimed at flight students and flight schools and enables practical learning of radio communication, conveniently from home and at your own pace. Below, we present all the features and modules that will take your radio skills to the next level.

Simulator - Realistic ATC radio simulation

At the heart of Learn ATC is our aeronautical radio simulator – a unique training tool that allows you to practise communicating with air traffic control (ATC) in a realistic live environment. You choose a real or self-defined flight route and go through the entire radio procedure: from taxi clearance to take-off and flight manoeuvres to landing clearance. You communicate in real time with a virtual air traffic controller, almost as if you were sitting in the cockpit and communicating by radio in real life.

For beginners, there is a simple mode where you can concentrate entirely on talking to the virtual tower. The system gives you helpful suggestions and automates many steps (e.g. frequency changes) so that you can familiarise yourself with the radio procedures step by step. As you become more confident, you can switch to individual mode and adapt the simulator to your needs – right up to challenging professional settings where you control all processes yourself.

Practical features such as a frequency changer for manual frequency changes, an integrated flight plan, selectable aircraft types and an adjustable noise level (for authentic radio noise) make the simulation amazingly realistic. Your training sessions are saved so that you can review them at any time or continue them later. Experience it for yourself – our simulator will make you fit and confident in radio communication in no time!

School - Your aeronautical radio training modules

In the "School" section, you will find the simulator and all other training modules you need to learn radio communication from scratch. Here you can work on specific skills – from listening comprehension and spelling to applying your radio knowledge in typical flight situations. There is even an integrated exam preparation section. All learning content is interactive and builds on each other so that you can make continuous progress.

Our question catalog is based on the official ECQB-PPL database (PPL-A, PPL-H, SPL, BPL). This means you’re training with the exact questions used in official pilot theory exams across Europe. At the same time, Learn ATC prepares you for the German radio certificates (BZF I/II and AZF): by combining ECQB questions with our realistic simulator, listening & spelling trainers, and practice scenarios, you’ll master both the theoretical knowledge and the practical communication skills required for the exams.

Our predefined flight scenarios put you in typical everyday flight situations – from simple take-offs to challenging approach procedures. Each scenario presents new communication challenges and helps you apply what you have learned in realistic dialogues. Since there are often several ways to successfully master a radio dialogue, it is worth going through the scenarios several times. You will find that with each run-through, you become more confident and learn alternative phrases or procedures. In addition, we are constantly expanding the collection, so there are always new cases to discover.

Spelling Trainer focuses on the NATO/ICAO alphabet and correct spelling in aeronautical radio communications. Through a variety of exercises, you will learn to spell identifiers, names, and codes quickly and accurately – naturally using the official terms from Alfa to Zulu. This training improves your reaction time and reinforces the spelling alphabet so that it becomes second nature. You will then be well prepared when you need to clearly and distinctly transmit your call sign or complicated words over the radio, for example.

In this module, you will improve your understanding of spoken radio messages. You will listen to original or realistically simulated ATC announcements and practise understanding and recording them correctly. The Listening Trainer helps you get used to the fast pace of speech and the special phrases used in aviation radio communication. The goal: to be able to quickly pick out important information and confidently repeat radio instructions – just as is required for real readbacks in the cockpit.

Wiki – Our aviation glossary

The integrated wiki serves as a comprehensive reference work for aviation and aeronautical radio terminology. Technical terms, abbreviations and idioms from the field of aviation are explained in an understandable way, and the knowledge database is constantly growing. The best thing about it is that the wiki is intelligently cross-linked across the entire platform. If an unfamiliar term appears in an exercise or simulation, simply click on it and you will immediately receive an explanation. No term remains unexplained – you deepen your background knowledge incidentally during training.

Tools - All important information about airports at a glance

The Aerodrome Finder is your interactive atlas for airports and landing sites worldwide. You can search for any airport on a map and view all the important information: the ICAO and IATA codes, number and length of runways (including orientation), permitted flight operations (VFR/IFR), airport category (e.g. international commercial airport, regional airport, heliport or private airfield) and much more. Even the active radio frequencies of the airfield are displayed directly. This tool is not only practical for selecting a realistic flight destination in the simulator – it's also fun to simply discover new airports and learn more about them.

The Frequency Finder gives you quick access to the radio frequencies of every aerodrome. Whether it's ground, tower, approach or ATIS – select an airport or aerodrome and you'll immediately see all the associated radio frequencies. This is particularly helpful if you need to set the frequencies yourself in advanced simulation mode. But it's also worth taking a look outside of training: you can find out which radio frequencies are used at your home or favourite aerodrome. The Frequency Finder provides you with all this information in a clear and up-to-date format.
