Subchapter 9.2 – IFR Distress and Urgency Communications

Full MAYDAY example:

"MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY. Zurich Approach, HB-CDA, Piper Cherokee, engine failure, number one engine failed and unable to maintain altitude, requesting immediate descent and vectors to nearest suitable aerodrome. Last known position 15 DME east of Zurich, Flight Level 100, descending. Five souls on board."

ATC will immediately:

Clear all other traffic from your vicinity.
Vector you to the nearest suitable aerodrome with emergency services.
Coordinate with fire and rescue services.
Relay your position to search and rescue if necessary.
Provide descent clearance and landing instructions.

After declaring MAYDAY, you have priority over all other traffic. Do not worry about crossing someone else's altitude or heading; ATC will handle separation. Your job is to fly the aircraft and follow ATC instructions.
