Altimeters work by measuring atmospheric pressure and converting it to altitude above sea level. But atmospheric pressure changes constantly due to weather systems, altitude, and time. Two aircraft flying at the same altitude over different aerodromes will see different pressure readings if they use local pressure. This is dangerous. To prevent collisions, pilots must use a standard pressure setting when flying higher altitudes or between different pressure regions.
