Navigational assistance: When you are uncertain of your exact position, a VDF bearing provides confirmation. You can plot it on your chart and know you are on that line from the station.
Position fixing: By obtaining bearings from two different stations (or from the same station at different times), you can plot two intersecting lines of position and determine your precise location.
Tracking to and from stations: A QDM allows you to fly directly toward a station (homing in), while a QDR allows you to fly directly away from it. This capability is essential when visibility is poor or when you need to navigate to a specific location.
Locating aircraft in emergency situations: When an aircraft is in distress and its position is unknown, Direction Finding is one of the tools search and rescue services use to locate it. The distressed aircraft's radio transmissions can be tracked by multiple ground stations, and the intersection of bearings from multiple stations reveals the aircraft's location.
