Zulu Time (Z)

Zulu Time refers to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in aviation and military communication. It ensures that all global operations, regardless of local time zones or daylight saving changes, use a single, standardized time reference. The letter “Z” (Zulu) is the ICAO phonetic alphabet designation for the time zone at longitude 0°, also known as the Prime Meridian.

• Avoids confusion caused by local time differences or daylight saving time
• Standardizes communication across international airspace, flight planning, and ATC
• Required in flight plans, weather reports (METAR/TAF), NOTAMs, and ATC clearances

Zulu Time is always expressed in 24-hour format and followed by “Z” in written and spoken contexts.

Tip: In Central European Summer Time (CEST), Zulu time is 2 hours behind.
