Subchapter 10.7 – Speed and Accuracy Under Pressure

Error 1: Reading back only part of the clearance because you wrote down only part of it.
Solution: Write it all down. Use abbreviations if needed: SPD 120 DESC 4500 HDG 150 RWY 08R FL 80
Error 2: Transmitting while still writing, missing the next transmission from ATC.
Solution: Complete your readback, then update your notes.
Error 3: Losing situational awareness because you're focused on the radio.
Solution: Maintain a 70/30 split: 70% on flying the aircraft, 30% on the radio. ATC will repeat if necessary.
Error 4: Confusing multiple turn and altitude changes.
Solution: Read back each clearance sequentially, not all at once. If ATC gives three things, acknowledge each in order.
Error 5: Saying "ready to copy" and then not having a pen ready.
Solution: Always have a pen and notepad ready before you call ATC. Professional pilots have these within arm's reach throughout the flight.
