Radio Failure Procedures: Maintaining Safety Without Communication

Transmitting blind is a technique you use when you believe your radio is transmitting but you have no confirmation that anyone is receiving you. You might be in an area with poor radio propagation, or your receiver might be inoperative, or you might be out of range of any station. Here is what you do:

Make a transmission on the appropriate frequency, speaking clearly and slowly, repeating key information:

Even if you hear no response, someone on the ground might be receiving you. They will see you on radar if they have radar coverage, and they will know your position and intention. Continue flying your planned track, descend as appropriate, and proceed toward your destination. If the receiver failure resolves, you may then hear ATC clearances.
