Part 2: The Aeronautical Information Publication and Its Purpose

What do you actually find in the AIP that's relevant to a VFR pilot practicing radiotelephony?
For each aerodrome:
  • Aerodrome location and elevation — so you know where to find it and what altitude to report.
  • Runway layout and dimensions — relevant for planning approaches and understanding clearances.
  • Radio frequencies /strong> — Tower, Ground ATIS Approach, FIS AFIS, as applicable. This is essential: you can't call anyone if you don't have the right frequency
  • Hours of operation — whether the tower is staffed 24/7 or only during certain hours. After hours, the aerodrome might be uncontrolled, and you'd use a different frequency or a pilot frequency.
  • Approach procedures and holding patterns — described in detail so you know what to expect and how to fly the procedure.
  • Significant obstacles or hazards — tall buildings, mountains, restricted airspace nearby.
  • Special procedures or restrictions — for example, a particular runway might be usable only in one direction, or landing might be by prior arrangement.
  • Fuel and services — whether the field has fuel, maintenance, overnight parking, etc. Useful for planning.
  • Noise restrictions — many aerodromes have curfews or noise-abatement procedures that affect your departures and arrivals.
For navigation aids (VOR, NDB, VDF):
  • Frequency and identifier — so you can select the right aid.
  • Location — which runway it's aligned with (if applicable) or where it sits on the chart.
  • Range and service area — how far you can reliably receive the signal.
  • Restrictions or outages — whether the aid is out of service for maintenance, or has limited hours.
