Subchapter 9.1 – Communication Failure Under IFR

Communication failure in IFR flight is among the most serious abnormal situations you will face. Unlike VFR, where you can land at the nearest suitable aerodrome, IFR communication loss means you are in controlled airspace, potentially on a complex clearance, and ATC cannot hear you or provide guidance. The stakes are high: loss of separation, disorientation, fuel exhaustion.

The first rule is fundamental: aviate, navigate, communicate—in that order. If your radio fails, your immediate duty is to maintain control of the aircraft and determine where you are. Communication will follow.

IFR communication failure is divided into two scenarios: receiver failure (you hear ATC but ATC cannot hear you) and transmitter failure (ATC hears you but you cannot hear them). Both require immediate recognition and action.
