  • Aerodrome and runway identifier
  • Date and time of observation
  • Runway condition code (1–5, where 1 is good and 5 is unusable)
  • Depth of snow/ice/slush in centimeters
  • Friction coefficient (if measured)
  • Remarks (e.g., "patchy," "compacted," "icy")
Example SNOWTAM: "SNOWTAM LOWW RWY11L 260200 1 60 0.28" Breakdown:
  • LOWW = Vienna aerodrome ICAO code
  • RWY11L = Runway 11 Left
  • 260200 = 26 February, 0200 UTC (observation date/time)
  • 1 = Runway condition code 1 (good/dry)
  • 60 = Snow depth in centimeters
  • 0.28 = Friction coefficient (poor braking action)
As a pilot conducting a flight plan to an aerodrome where SNOWTAMs are issued, you must review the latest SNOWTAM to determine if your aircraft's performance characteristics (braking action, takeoff distance, landing distance) can safely use that runway. If the runway condition code indicates poor friction, a heavier aircraft may not be able to depart or land safely.
