Listen Actively: Monitor the frequency throughout your flight in the circuit. Every call from another aircraft is information you use to plan your action.
Look Outside: Visual scanning is your primary defense. Use a systematic scan pattern. Look above, below, and to all sides. In the circuit, especially, watch for other traffic at your altitude and slightly above and below.
Communicate Clearly: Ensure every transmission is clear, grammatically correct, and free of jargon. Include your callsign position, and intention in every call.
Decide Conservatively: If you are unsure whether the runway is clear, do not land. If you hear no information about landing traffic but you are suspicious, do another orbit. If the wind has shifted significantly since you last heard, request updated information before departing.
Know Your Field: Familiarize yourself with the aerodrome layout. Know where the taxiways are, which runway is preferred in which wind, what the holding point looks like, where the apron is. This knowledge allows you to make faster, more confident decisions.
