Knots explained

6 views·Sep 28, 2026

The unit of speed in aviation: one nautical mile per hour, about **1.852 km/h** or **1.15 mph**. Airspeed, ground speed and wind are all given in knots, e.g. the METAR wind 27015KT is 15 knots from 270°. A nautical mile is one minute of latitude, which makes distances easy to measure on a chart. 100 knots is roughly 185 km/h.
