QDM, QDR and direction finding

1 viewOct 1, 2026

When you are unsure where you are, one call to a direction-finding station tells you which way to fly to reach it. You learn QDM, QDR, QTE and QUJ, how to ask for a bearing, the bearing classes, and how to tell you passed overhead.

What you learn

  • Explain how a VHF direction finder measures your call
  • Tell QDM from QDR, and both from QUJ and QTE
  • Ask for a QDM and read back the bearing and class
  • Say how accurate bearing classes A to D are
  • Tell from the QDM that you have passed overhead
