Key Distinctions: Readback Rules and Procedure Words

At uncontrolled aerodromes, readback rules are more relaxed than at controlled fields, but precision still matters. When AFIS provides information (wind, runway, QNH), you readback what you received. When you announce your position and intentions, you do not readback—you state them.

At AFIS:

Information (wind, QNH runway, traffic) must be read back.
Instructions to report on final or at holding point should be acknowledged.
Requests (for taxi info, landing info) do not require formal readback your acknowledgment of the response suffices.

At unattended fields:

There is no readback because there is no ground station. You broadcast and move on.
You listen to other aircraft to understand the traffic situation.

The procedure words you use at uncontrolled fields are simpler than at ATC fields. You will hear and use:

"Request taxi information" (uncontrolled equivalent of "request taxi")
"Request departure information" or "request landing information" (uncontrolled equivalent of "request clearance )
"Ready for departure" (uncontrolled equivalent of "ready for takeoff")
"Take off at own discretion" or "land at own discretion" (the key phrase emphasizing no ATC control)
"Roger" (understanding confirmation)
"Wilco" (will comply)

You will NOT hear at uncontrolled fields:

"Cleared" (that is ATC-only)
"Line up and wait" (that is ATC-only)
"Push back approved" (that is ATC-only)
