Subchapter 10.6 – Procedure Word Review and Summary

Readback Checklist for All Clearances

When ATC issues any clearance, use this mental checklist:
  1. Write it down immediately (even if you think you'll remember it).
  2. Read back the entire clearance /strong> in the same order ATC issued it.
  3. Include mandatory readback items: altitude, heading, speed, runway, frequency approach type.
  4. Use correct units: "flight level," "feet," "hectopascals."
  5. Read back with your callsign at the end (or beginning if it's a response to ATC).
  6. Spell out ambiguous elements: use phonetic for letters, spell out abbreviations.
  7. Do NOT read back: wind, temperature, time, callsigns of other aircraft.
  8. Ask for clarification if you don't understand something.
