Subchapter 10.5 – Common Readback Errors and Exam Traps

The Trap: Pilots use ROGER when they should use WILCO, or vice versa. They also use "Copy" (which is non-standard in ICAO phraseology).

Wrong: "Roger, climb to flight level one-one-zero" (ROGER just means "I received," not "I will comply") Correct: "Wilco, climb to flight level one-one-zero" (WILCO means "I received and will comply")

Wrong: "Copy that" (non-ICAO phraseology) Correct: "Roger" (for information) or "Wilco" (for an instruction you will execute)

Rule: Use ROGER for information and readbacks of ATC actions. Use WILCO for instructions you will execute. Never use "Copy."
