The En Route Environment

The en route phase brings together many of the skills you have learned in earlier lections. You will use the phonetic alphabet and number transmission rules you learned in Lection 4. You will use callsign procedures and readback rules from Lection 5. You will use procedure words from Lection 6. You will apply frequency selection and initial contact phraseology. You will demonstrate the discipline and professionalism that characterize good airmanship.

This lection focuses on the specific tasks that define the en route phase: Flight Information Service, position reporting, transponder operation, frequency changes, controlled airspace transit, and flight plan filing and closing. These are the core competencies of cross-country flying. Master them, and you are ready for the reality of flying across your region or beyond.
