Flight Information Service (FIS)

Once you are in contact with FIS, you are expected to maintain that contact throughout your flight. This means:

Keep the frequency active. Maintain a listening watch on the FIS frequency. Do not change frequency without permission or notification.
Report position at required intervals. Standard position report intervals for FIS are usually every thirty minutes, or as requested by the facility. Some facilities ask for position reports when crossing certain geographical points (e.g., at waypoints, or when leaving one FIR and entering another).
Report significant changes. If you change your altitude, your route, or your destination while in contact with FIS, you must inform the facility immediately.
Respond to traffic calls. When FIS provides you with traffic information, you are expected to acknowledge it, search for the traffic, and report whether you have visual contact.

To terminate contact with FIS, use clear phraseology. When you are approaching an aerodrome with ATC, you will change to Tower frequency. Inform FIS of this change before doing so. You can say:

"OE-CMV, leaving FIS, joining Vienna Tower, good day."

FIS will acknowledge your departure from the service. If you are simply concluding the flight in uncontrolled airspace, you can state:

"OE-CMV, concluding FIS, landing Brno."

FIS will acknowledge. In either case, you should wait for an acknowledgement before changing frequency, so FIS knows you have safely left their service.
