Frequency Changes and Sector Transitions

Frequency management is a fundamental skill. Here are the essential rules:

Always acknowledge a frequency change instruction. Read back the new frequency to confirm you have it correct.
Never change frequency in the middle of a transmission or without permission. Wait for an appropriate moment.
Establish contact on the new frequency promptly. Do not wait; call the new facility within a few seconds of changing frequency.
Use the initial contact format when calling a new facility. The new facility does not yet know who you are, so introduce yourself clearly.
If you do not receive a response, repeat the call. Use the same format, but after the second attempt, try to contact another facility if one is available, or check your frequency is correct.

In crowded airspace, frequency changes happen frequently. You might change frequency every ten or fifteen minutes. Each change requires attention and correct procedure. The better you execute these frequency changes, the more professionally you sound and the more efficiently the airspace operates.
