Transiting Controlled Airspace

Before you enter controlled airspace, you must establish contact with the controlling facility. This is often done while still in uncontrolled airspace, so that by the time you reach the boundary of controlled airspace, you are already in contact and have been assigned an altitude and (if necessary) a squawk code.

To establish contact before entering controlled airspace, call the facility on the frequency published in the AIP. Use your standard initial contact call:

"Vienna Approach, OE-CMV, Cessna one-seven-two, forty miles west of Vienna, flight level nine thousand five hundred, destination Brno."

Vienna Approach will respond with your assigned flight level and any restrictions:

"OE-CMV, Vienna Approach, good morning, climb flight level one-one thousand, squawk two-three-zero-zero."

You will acknowledge and execute the climb:

"Climb flight level one-one thousand, squawk two-three-zero-zero, OE-CMV."
