The VFR Conspicuity Code: 7000

In normal VFR operations in most of Europe, when you are not under radar control and not in Class C airspace, you squawk 7000. This is your VFR conspicuity code, sometimes called the "VFR code" or "Mode C code." It tells ATC and other pilots that you are operating under VFR rules (not IFR) and you are not assigned a specific code.

Set 7000 before or immediately after takeoff from an uncontrolled aerodrome if you are on an open flight plan. If you file a flight plan with radar service (e.g., crossing a busy TMA or transiting controlled airspace), you will be assigned a squawk code different from 7000. You set that assigned code instead.

Remember: transponder digit range is 0–7 (octal). 7000 is valid. 8000, 8888, 9999 are not valid in European airspace.
