Part 1: Radio Direction Finding – The Foundation

Radio direction finding, or VDF (Very High Frequency Direction Finding), is one of those elegant solutions that aviation developed when modern technology wasn't yet available. Today, you have GPS. But VDF still exists in your exam syllabus, and more importantly, it remains a practical tool when you need navigational help or you're not entirely sure of your position.
The basic principle is simple: a ground station equipped with special directional antenna can determine the bearing FROM the station TO your aircraft, or FROM your aircraft TO the station. The station then tells you the bearing on the radio. You know where the station is (it's published on your chart), so you know where you must be.
Let's be clear about what VDF provides and what it doesn't. It gives you a single line on the map—a line that passes through both the station and your aircraft. But it doesn't tell you where on that line you are. You might be 5 miles away or 50 miles away. That's why a second bearing from a different station (or two bearings from the same station a few minutes apart) is so valuable: they give you a fix, a precise point.
VDF is still widely available at larger and medium-sized aerodromes across Europe. The ground station operates on VHF (in the aviation band 118–137 MHz) and can respond to your request within seconds. Many ATC units and AFIS stations provide a VDF service alongside their normal duties. You'll find a list of aerodromes offering VDF in your national AIP.
