Pushback

Procedures

Moving an aircraft backwards out of its parking stand with a tug, because most airliners cannot or may not reverse under their own power. At busy airports you need approval first, usually from Ground or Apron: “request pushback”, answered for example with “pushback approved, facing east”.

The ground crew and the flight deck talk over a headset during the push, and the engines are often started at the same time (“push and start”).
