Readability scale

Phraseology

The 1 to 5 scale for reporting how clearly a radio transmission is received. It answers the question “How do you read?”:

  1. Unreadable
  2. Readable now and then
  3. Readable but with difficulty
  4. Readable
  5. Perfectly readable

On a radio check you might reply “Read you five”, meaning the signal is loud and clear.
