Q-codes

NavigationPhraseology

QDM, QDR, QTE, QNH, QFE

Three-letter codes from the Morse era that are still used on the radio. The common ones:

  • QNH: altimeter setting for altitude above mean sea level
  • QFE: altimeter setting for height above the aerodrome
  • QDM: magnetic heading to steer to reach the station, with no wind
  • QDR: magnetic bearing from the station to you
  • QTE: true bearing from the station to you

A pilot unsure of their position can ask a direction-finding station “request QDM”.
